I am Louisville born and raised. I have a B.S. in Psychology from UNC Chapel Hill, a Master’s in Social Work from UofL & a License in Clinical Social Work. My children attended Highland Pres in their preschool years (2009-2014). I began subbing at Highland Pres in 2013, onboarding as a classroom teacher in 2015.
Children are my absolute favorite humans – I have always worked with them, even as an undergrad. I enjoy their lack of filter, curiosity, sense of wonder, openness & big hearts. Highland Pres has a unique warmth and sincere, grounded sense of child development and learning through play. The school’s commitment to preserving childhood and play drew me to them first as a parent. Once I experienced the magic of the school and community, I never wanted to leave. As a teacher, I get to explore terrific books, rich art projects (probably my personal favorite), music, dance, building, and lots of nature and outdoor play. What’s not to like? I love that our school allows time for children to think deeply, to see a project through without the need to check something ‘academic’ off the list. Real learning comes from independent thought, experimentation, collaboration, listening to the ideas of others, trial and error: figuring things out for yourself instead of having someone tell you what to know in a top down sort of fashion. Highland Pres values slowing down for deep learning, freedom of choice, and the JOY that comes from learning through play.
I live with my husband, 2 teenage sons & 2 rascally dogs. Art, travel (emphasis on mountains and national parks), jewelry making, furniture restoration, yoga & listening to audiobooks are some of my hobbies. I have a booth at the Mellwood Antique Mall where I sell art & vintage items.
